my bedroom tour continues

so i took some more photos of the art in my boudoir... well, technically it's not just a lady's dressing room, it's hugh's too, but don't tell him. i've already started putting succulents on his "sacred space" as he refers to the lone shelf he occupies. don't feel sorry for him though. he has plenty of his gadgetry in the rest of the house.

bed with studio violet poster above

above is an awesome poster from studio violet (hung with this nifty hanger from rare device). below is my newest painting trade from the amazing annie galvin of 3 fish studios

awesome annie galvin

i've wanted to make a collage of prints like in my earlier post, but for right now i'm really appreciating the white space.

violet and annie
mom's curtins

above are the fantastic curtains my mom sewed for us when she was visiting a few weeks ago. it's made a HUGE difference from our white flimsy curtains that blinded us every morning. these babies are thick and do the trick. i also quite like the blue rose material scored at the discount fabric place on mission street. my mom also made those sweet pillows from her last trip here. i heart my mom so. thank you. i also adore having a love seat in our bedroom (especially when it's not covered with clothing) to read on.

not to mention another fabulous photo from andrea. this was taken of me TTV style when we were on the oregon coast and unfortunately not for sale... i don't think? and the one below is by yours truly and will soon be available as a print in my shop... it says "falling asleep" on it which feels quite appropriate in a bedroom, eh?

jamie hogan's art

and truly last, but not least is a beautiful pastel drawing made by one of my role models (my dad's cousin) talented jamie hogan perhaps based on this photo from our wedding.

thanks for letting me give you a tour:)

too many accessories?

i have an accessories problem
impossible.

i'm gearing up to show you photos from my bedroom because i have some lovely new art up and my mom made me some new curtains (it was on the list for 32). here is the first photo.

what i really wanted to highlight was andrea of hula7o's beautiful photo of beautiful accessories. it's a meta photo hanging above my own flowered accessories. here's a close-up of the scene. basically if you have accessories you don't need to change clothes. anyone else on this train?

by the way, i'm so excited about the responses for an intern! thank you.

ohhhhhh and speaking of accessories i think there are exactly 2 true love necklaces (my collab with moodswing studio) left in my shoppe.

seeking a studio intern!

hello,

i'm really excited about the possibility of finding a studio intern who can help grow my art biz! ideally i'd love someone who is interested in art and learning the ins and outs of running a small art business.

i work both in my home office in the mission district of SF (walking distance to BART). i package orders and do design work on the computer in my home office, while i paint and make creative messes in my art studio behind my home that is shared with other awesome artists. i am flexible around hours and times, but would love to work together to create a schedule and goals that work for us both!

my days vary between preparing for art shows, sending out orders from my shoppe, lesson planning for teaching art classes, on-line marketing and illustration jobs, some of which i collaborate on with my husband hugh. some recent clients have been shirts for Patagonia, board game characters for University Games and a rock album for Blame Sally.

here are some areas which i need help with :

office/studio space: help organize, prepare panels for painting, print and package orders for my shoppe and for shows

creative & artistic: i would love to teach someone my artistic process and how i develop work, stay inspired, brainstorm, sketch and execute new ideas

admin: help keep inventory of packaging and art supplies, update mailing list, post office runs, invoice jobs, enter info into quickbooks

design: photograph, style, scan, clean up with photoshop, upload work on-line, help create promos for postcards, advertising, newsletters, update website

marketing: help send out samples to various galleries, boutiques and agents and blogs

unfortunately i cannot pay at this point, but would i would love to exchange for art, school credit and can teach you painting and any aspect of art making and the illustration business that you are interested in learning.

thank you! please email me with any questions or interest: matimcd (AT) hotmail (DOT) com

feeling in love and grateful

H&M.jpg
i'm feeling so much gratitude for my dear husband hugh and how he not only supports me as a partner, but also in my journey as an artist. sometimes it's challenging to be in an artist couple. as my mom said yesterday, "it takes little to make you 2 happy". it's true. we have our imaginations and sketch books and are not materialistic, well, except for our growing art collection on our walls and need for art supplies;)

this photo i always thought really goofy in our pjs, hats and morning faces. our talented friend tom took it one morning to use up the last of a roll. we were living above him and his also talented partner monica, actually hugh and i were squished together with all of our worldly possessions in one room in our friend nigel's flat after a couple months back in maine and in oaxaca, mexico almost 6 years ago!

we have a beautiful apartment and studio space now, yet even if we were squished in one little room again with just a couple trinkets, i think we'd be just fine.

this song spoke to me this morning on this topic of no money, honey.

ps- hugh's caption for this photo is: back from mexico, no $, lots of trinkets.

missing venice today

i heart venice
i heart Venice 2
Venice sunset gondalas 2

sigh. i still haven't properly sorted through our italy photos, but have some lovely ones from our british traveling companion nigel from venice that i uploaded a few of on my flickr. our camera actually pooped out mid weekend photo-shoot and nigel took up the slack and bore with me and my attempts to art direct. these shots are all nigel though. lovely.... aren't they? a huge highlight was our night time gondola ride to celebrate hugh's 40th with the only female gondelier. my oh my, she was amazing... singing through the night around the turns. i'll never forget the ornate spooky scenes of people standing in shadows and moss covered iron doors illuminated in candlelight as we smoothly slipped by. wow. the rasberry champagne that we drank on the boat and subsequent black squid meal was pretty memorable too :)

upon our return i painted this painting of an elephant in a silver boat with the deep waters i recalled from that mysterious city and the brilliant rich colored buildings falling in to the lagoon.

Venezia Elephant
this one is printed on high quality luster paper that fits perfectly in my new mattes! it will be part of a series of layered paintings i'm going to offer in my shop soon.

Here is the interview that ETA did with me that was excerpted in their newsletter:

ETA: When did you know that you were meant to be an artist?

Mati McDonough: I've always wanted to be an artist, but it's taken me forever to call myself an artist!

ETA: What is your most vivid, earliest memory of encountering or creating art in your childhood?

MM: I think my first memory of drawing was of moths and pollywogs, age five.

ETA: Do you have a favorite gallery? If so, what?

MM: Honestly, I am not just saying this to curry favor, but growing up in the Seacoast area, i always *loved* Nahcotta and dreamt of being in a show there some day when i grew up and hey, voila! I love so many galleries though and feel lucky to be in a few, namely yours!

ETA: Do you listen to music while you draw/create? What's the CD/album you can't stop listening to right now?

MM: Oh such a good question! Music is essential to making art for me and helping me get in the zone. Bon Iver, She & Him and CocoRosie have been on solid rotation today. Ohhh and my friend just dropped by the newest Lucinda Williams earlier called "Little Honey". I love her achy voice so.

ETA: Louise Bourgeois is quoted as saying, "Art guarantees sanity." How do you feel about that? Agree? Why?

MM: YES, absolutely. I think it's a perfect outlet for channeling your crazy thoughts. It's meditative too. I also think from a developmental standpoint art making helps you make decisions and work out alternatives. Like should I put blue or chartreuse here and how can I resolve this issue of the little man jumping off the page. I think art education should be mandatory and integrated into all subjects for this reason and so many more.

ETA: What would your pseudonym be?

MM: Let's see... "Uncle Floyd" is a grumpy alter ego I inhabited once for the purpose of art making-- to free myself from making "cute" art. It worked, but then the cuteness crept back in! I've accepted it. That's an alter ego though. I actually love my name and just wish people would pronounce it right, so my pseudonym would be phonetic: Matey Rose, maybe preface it with "Argh".

Thank you for reading!
