pdx

lately i've been day dreaming about my birthday and taking a trip up to portland with hugh (he's never been! a bike fanatic like him?) and staying at the ace.... {sigh}. i'd also like to see this lovely lady who always has a camera in hand. i came across these old bits of color and texture from my trip there about a year ago and am re-inspired...i realize i naturally document details to later draw inspiration upon for paintings. i'd like to learn more about photography as an art form, but for now it's fun to treat it like specimen gathering for paintings.

I swear I am specimin gathering for my paintings every day with the camera too, its the best! We visited Portland this past summer, we did not stay at the Ace but we went there and sat in the lobby with a coffee, such great decor and ambiance...we soaked it all in!

Awesome photos...I live in Portland and your pictures made me extra happy about that! :-)

A couple of years ago I surprised my husband and we stayed at the Ace. Amazing and I highly recommend it! The ONLY bad thing...the incredible aroma of corned beef from Kenny and Zuke's permeates the place...it's only bad because I'm vegetarian! My husband says it's THE BEST corned beef he's ever had and he is a born and raised Jewish boy!

Hey, other spectacular places to stay would be the Kennedy School and Edgefield- both run by McMenamins... very special and full of art. You MUST visit and ideally stay at one of them! Kennedy is a converted school, Edgefield was a former poorhouse (and later a retirement home) so a bit on the ghosty and creepy side, but in a good way, artwork and murals all over, very soulful place. Edgefield also now has a spa, (Ruby's), and is outside of PDX near Hood River. A must visit!

I can see these photos' patterns and images and textures in your work! My fiance (then boyfriend) and I stumbled upon The Ace when we were in Portland two summers ago. Cool! Enjoy your happy art!
