artist spotlight: paperbling + nosideup= same artist

ohhh. i just joined papernstich and came across this great artist from barcelona... first i was admiring her paper bling and then the intricate hair drawings and realized it was the same chica.

aren't these both great? and they kind of go together too.

tuesday news

hi,

i have some fun things happening.

*one is a true love custom necklace give-away on kelly's blog! wahoo!

necklace giveaway today!

i have been loving laying out the art for these and seeing what people are dreaming up. sarah from england just ordered a beautiful one with this on the front and this on the back. gorgeous and i wouldn't have begun to imagine all the possible combinations. it becomes a 3 way artistic collaboration between you the designer, me the painter and kristen the jeweler! so fun!

i have to mention that the beads have become even more delicious and colorful since this photo above-- kristen keeps sending me links to new discoveries of vintage, czech glass and semi-precious stones. i feel like we are pirates searching for treasure troves!

*last 2 days of my September SALE! all my regular sized prints= $20!

i stumbled across my work on this sweet blog and loved seeing it styled by holly:

prints1.jpg

* i've also added all these new birds prints to my shop (all birdies can be used in the necklaces!)
bird collage

* i have a piece in another collab coloring book. this awesome one was designed by yael called "we are healthy". my drawing cracks me up because i drew it to remind myself to floss and printed it out and framed it in my bathroom so i would remember ;)
we are healthy!

speaking of, i have to run to my dentist appointment... i have a consultation about getting my wisdom teeth out :( they are wise, why should i remove them?!

*hugh*

it feels overkill to say this, as it seems so obvious, but i am really really extremely proud and inspired on a daily basis by my husband hugh and his artistic vision. yes, i get annoyed with him for all the typical domestic things like.... leaving every cupboard door open for example and not ever taking out the trash. but today let's put all that aside and celebrate hugh not just for being my sweet husband, but for being an awesome artist!
my husband hugh in front of his surfer poster!
here's a recent photo i snapped with my i-phone of hugh's art in our neighborhood! and here's his recent blog post about some great projects he's been working on. i really love seeing his process/sketches, don't you?

artist + style: skinny laminx + victoria

3sk1.jpg
i love, love, love skinny laminx's textiles (i wear her apron daily to paint in)! and was so excited to read more about heather, the maker behind the shoppe, on victoria's blog sf girl by bay! victoria always has the best posts! she's adorable as a person too. i've loved chatting with her at a couple parties lately. before i really knew her in person, she sweetly featured me as an "unexpected guest" and i was very honored. thanks heather + victoria for a peek into your world! as a pleasant aside, one of the lovely perks of wearing her apron is that i look down and read "skinny" (with the tag folded) daily! it does wonders for my self-esteem:)

happy fall, all

how are you?

i feel a new crispness in the air which makes me feel so content. san francisco's fall is like the east coast's summer, but with a slight crispness that makes it distinctly fall for me! i've been loving the sun and how it brings people outside. personally i've been taking walks up to bernal hill to soak in the sunshine. i've also been spending more time with friends over delicious lingering outside meals (still with a lot of layers on). i'm especially loving the food from the farmer's market with the arrival of kabocha + butternut squash... tomatoes and strawberries still too out this way. here i am with my market ladies miss jen + shash!

jen, shash and me at market

i've been busy working on some fun painting commissions and secret projects that will be revealed at a later date! i've also added a bunch of new prints to my shoppe of the feathered variety.

How To Identify Birds

also a few fall feeling ones of leaves and trees. and a few magic ones too. my september sale for $20 runs for one more week and then my print prices return back to $30! i have several last ever prints too for $15 so get now or forever goodbye. unless you send me dark chocolate ;)

i have listed 2 of my hand painted original bird houses too! here they currently are resting in our deep plum + pink dining room (the paint color in here is called "love affair" which sealed the deal for hugh and i).

show the world your magic manifesto

show the world your magic_blue.jpg
the last few years i've been mediating in my studio before i begin creating... it sounds lofty, but it's simply sitting on a floor pillow for a few minutes and clearing my thoughts. repeatedly some form of this line came to me "show the world your magic". finally i wrote it down and tacked it to my studio wall just like so.

when i get stuck and overwhelmed with the oodles of art and trends and thousands of ways of doing things. i now simply look up and say "mati, show the world... you... your magic". what no one else has that is uniquely YOU. this is not easy mind you, but it helps to start from this place and eliminate some of the creative clutter and doubt.

next i try to remember that place that children occupy so easily of delightfully sharing their work "the look what i did mentality". i try to get to the most uninhibited place where i blow away all inner and outer critics out of fear of feeling foolish, overly romantic, sentimental, childish... the list goes on of course (i have well developed critics) and stay true to myself and the vision that wants to come through me and onto the page.

i think this mental state works well in art making, but it also carries over to any aspect of one's life. what is it that you want to share with the world that is your mark? what is at your core?

the part where magic comes in is perhaps an extension of the definition~ an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source. it's coming into your power from a deep source and trusting that it is safe to communicate your unique vision. and if you don't as martha graham says... it will be lost.

i realize i may be losing some of you (i feel my own cynicism jab), but i think that's part of the process of unearthing your *magic* is to come up against this resistance. what if i don't have anything to share? what if i've lost my way? what if i don't exactly know yet... yes. all of these are fears that bubble up to surface and then it is our job to trust our voice and move forward.

i share this with you as an invitation. in the hopes it might get someone out of a creative rut. and because i am personally on this path of unfurling my own creativity. and because it's confusing in the midst of trend forecasting and the immediacy of art and design blogs (that i personally adore down to the bones) to not be insanely influenced. it's challenging to slow down, listen close and strive for original ideas and to own your*magic*. i think it takes lots of practice and heaps of encouragement.

thank you hugh hands + feather, fern and bougainvillea care of bernal hill.

georgia o

last night i had a dream i met georgia o and she was quasi homeless and no one else recognized her. i had the most fascinating conversation with her about art and life and staying true to self. my friend donna pointed me to this footage of 92 year old o'keeffe. i think, perhaps, regardless of your feeling towards her art it is interesting to listen to her talk. i greatly admire georgia for paving the way for future female artists. i read her bio a couple years ago and was struck by what a drastically different time and how her strong willed persistence pioneered the way for us.

i also am a big fan of new mexico, so that piles on the love! last year my friend jessie and i took a road trip to one of georgia's beloved homes and walked mesas and her paintings resonated anew.

i like in this video if you get far enough she says something like "i tried to paint what i saw. i thought someone could tell me how to paint the landscape, but i found nobody could". i love this sentiment of sitting down and trying and doing it your own way.

thanks georgia o,
mati

more turquoise ellies here!

today i'm grateful for so many things! one of which is my beautiful and helpful intern jenny who is my model... her shirt is adorable (matches too) and she made it from a pillow cover! she and her husband joe are rocking out on their retrieval project and it looks like they are on their way to retrieving their belongings!

artist spotlight: laurel roth

My studio mate Laurel is having a show opening this thursday at the Frey Norris gallery here in SF. Her new work is stunning. I am very proud to share it with you here:
laurel-roth_birds_of_paradise_xl.JPG.jpeg
Birds of Paradise
Made from mixed media including fake fingernails, barrettes, false eyelashes, nail polish, jewelry, walnut, swarovski crystal and standing 48 x 50 x 50 inches high.
laurel-roth_carolina_parakeet_xl.JPG.jpeg
Biodiversity Reclamation Suits for Urban Pigeons: Carolina Parakeet
crocheted yarn, hand carved pigeon mannequin, walnut stand
8 x 9 x 13 in.

laurel-roth_food5_pig_xl.JPG.jpeg
Food #5, Pig
walnut, gold leaf, swarovski crystal
11 x 6 x 7 1/2 in.

I really admire Laurel as a person, her art, her work ethic, her modesty at her brilliance, her dog Fargo, her help building things, and her unexpected use of materials like fake nails painstakingly painted with a range of glittery blue polish. Forever there was a box of 1,000 hair clips in our courtyard and I would walk by and think how incredible that she has turned something so mundane and packaged into such overwhelming jaw dropping beauty like her fighting Birds of Paradise.

Here is an artist essay to get a broader scope of her work. If you're local stop by Laurel's opening this Thursday, September 3rd to see all her work in person!

Congratulations Laurel for your show!

Thanks,
Mati
