Surtex oh Surtex

I've been wanting to go to the New York surface design show called Surtex for years! I love textile design and pattern making and I really wanted to see the show in person. Last year however I chickened out due to the cost of the flight, hotel and NYC livin' and for no real "reason" to go.

This year i finally took the leap and went because my new fantastic agent Lilla Rogers Studio was showing my work alongside her other talented artists! A highlight of my trip was meeting so many of them in person!!

Here are a few shots of Lilla's booth and my banner. Thankfully there are better ones here by Print & Pattern. Here's another great booth & recap by Jessica Swift who I enjoyed meeting tremendously.

making golden spanish sunshine

saturday our lovely teacher diana taught shashtin and jenifer and i mmm..marmalade makin' using a giant box of seville oranges from the farmer's market. below are photos taken by shash of the process & here are jen's polas and nicely jotted down recipe. this recipe (and 20 lbs of oranges!) are not for the weary... it took us 12 hours from market to mouth ;) granted we took some tea, sandwich and chocolate breaks! it was well worth it though--i've been enjoying it every morning since and it brings the golden sun during our rain. thank you ladies!

bluegrass, er, rocks

9018_159636640744_639165744_2822157_375325_n.jpg

this weekend we managed to catch some good music at the free bluegrass fest in golden gate park. every year it gets bigger, but somehow we still manage to run into our friends. these photos were taken by bob lake (the awesome mister of jenifer). they nearly stepped on us as they walked through the crowds with their doggie dixie... hey, we know you we said, have a seat. i love the top photo and the line of white turbans, the sun and the crowd shot to the stage as we watched ms neko case. i feel like i'm there again. i've never seen someone more inspired and better with the i-phone camera than bob. he's a talented photographer all around.

my fave song of neko's is that "teenage feeling"... i like this video i found on youtube and the textiles:

i also found this sweet illustrated video of hers... the artist looks like julie morstad, but i'm not sure?:

happy listening,

in my newsletter i mentioned another SF opening with my paintings at arkay workshops and designs of mine available at rare device and the parklife! yay!

i'm off to squam! so excited to meet people, take classes, and honestly a bit nervous about our talk, a first! if you're in the new england area there will also be an art fair that i'll be participating in along with other talented artists.

We are all Renegades!

Renegade was awesome, but exhausting! It was like setting up a retail store for just 2 days... credit card ability, walls, tables, bags, merch... you get the drift. We far exceeded our expectations and had a blast but, are tired and still catching up and unpacking boxes.

I liken being a Renegade Crafter & Independent artist to this quote by the oh so talented Neko Case:
"Playing in an independent rock band will eventually make you equal parts truck driver, gladiator and mule. Glamour is for those with trust funds".

So today I feel like part mule and part truck driver... or bike rider with saddles on.

The biggest thrill was being inspired by all the other Renegades and their talent, plus meeting some of you in person. Here is a photo by one such lovely blogger. Thank you!

The photos of me & us were snapped by the amazing Kelly Rae who makes us smile. Please go over to her blog and leave her some good juju & healing thoughts.

eastern swing

i'm finally catching up from my vacation... a funny concept, eh?

my trip was in 3 parts= DC, maine & the boston area. first spent with my college friend Kara and her new adorable babe Lucy, then my family and my sweet sister and her husband respectively. here are some sights of colorful DC town houses, rothko (the colors are really so much more in person) maine lobstahs and my high school bro graduating (the salutorian, no less!) in no particular order. my bro is now on a almost 3 week hiking pilgrimage with a young friend in spain and i am so proud of him! go andrew!

i also had the pleasure of seeing my peak's island cousin jamie who is so inspiring in her artful life and is now blog-alicious. and stopping by Nahcotta with my dear childhood friend Lynn for one of their shows! i look forward to going to the opening of the next Enormous Tiny Show there in September and seeing them again!

i was writing to a friend earlier that we definitely need to figure out a way to be bi-coastal in the summertime for reals. i miss maine summers... long days stretched out with little to do. ahh. unless i lived there i suppose! my mom is up at the crack of dawn planting her dahlia bulbs, weeding, cooking, darning (she does) and yoga-ing before i even come downstairs for breakfast, so not everyone is as lazy as i.

oh yes, kelly and i had the pleasure of meeting the lovely + talented hula and her incredible little family last week. so sweet. i cannot wait to see them again! soon.
